Phantoms Swept on the Road by Jersey Blues
Lincroft, N.J. - The Delaware County Community baseball team got an up-close look at one of the top National Junior College Athletic Association Division-III teams in the country Sunday as the Phantoms lost two games to host Brookdale Community College.
The Jersey Blues (26-4) are currently ranked fourth among all NJCAA Division-III squads.
DCCC lost the first game, 26-2, and then Brookdale completed the sweep with a 26-0 victory in Game 2.
The Jersey Blues limited the Phantoms (1-11) to just five hits in the opener.
Benjamin Beasley and Gabe Palandro tallied two apiece, while Eric Engesser accounted for the other hit.
Brookdale's bats were hot from the start as the Jersey Blues amassed 27 hits in Game 1.
Vinny Zaffarese pitched four innings of shutout ball to get the win for the hosts, while Hunter Whitten took the loss for DCCC.
The Jersey Blues' pitchers combined to limit the Phantoms to two hits in the nightcap as Brookdale won its fifth in a row with a 26-0 victory in Game 2.
Engesser and Cidrick Navas accounted for the only hits for the visitors.
Brookdale's high-powered offense was once again humming as it came through with 28 more hits.
The Jersey Blues have scored double-digit runs in 20 of their 24 victories so far this season.
Palandro took the loss for DCCC, while Edison Gonzalez earned the win for Brookdale with no runs over four innings of action.
The Phantoms look to get back in the win column on Sunday when they take on Mercer County Community College for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
